CHAPTER FIFTEEN

HARPER

GO

Judging by the waning darkness outside the window, it’s the tiniest hours of the morning when I wake up starving. All I can think about is the pack of Red Vines sticking out beneath the magazine on the coffee table across from us.

“Come on,” I whisper, stretching my fingers out. Dammit.

I heave a sigh and resolve to wait for Declan to shift a bit.

My movie, The Cutting Edge, is on television. Kate gracefully skates past Doug, the hockey player turned figure skater, as he gets up close and personal with the ice for the hundredth time, and I’m getting into the movie—well, as much as I can, when there’s a rather large, beautiful man molded to my body.

We slept together. Just slept, but still. It was nice.

I’m reeling, thinking about how sleep might’ve gotten in the way of “letting go,” when my stomach frog-croaks super loud.

Maybe not finishing my omelet wasn’t the best choice.

The instant I move, Declan shifts, tightening his arm around me.

“I need to feed you.” His voice is gruff as he tugs me flush against him.

“If you can reach those Red Vines, I might be able to make it,” I say, arching my back. “By the way, you just missed the toe-pick scene, which—in my opinion—is one of the best parts of the whole movie.”

Declan grumbles, pressing into my arch. “Did they get to the famous Pamchenko Twist yet?”

“Nope.” I bite my tongue to stifle a laugh. “You know, the fact you remember the name tells me you’re a closet rom-com fan. Which means—”

“Which means…” he parrots.

“We’re going to have to watch this movie again when you’ve had more than four hours’ sleep.”

Shit.

A surge of panic washes over me, and I stiffen. Presumptuous much? I shouldn’t be making plans beyond tonight, even if it is just a movie. “You know, if you want,” I eke out in a futile attempt to recover.

He buries his face in the crook of my neck. “No, I want to. All the romance movies. Hockey players, billionaires with red rooms, rakes… If it’s got a happily-ever-after, I want to watch with you.” He chuckles good-naturedly, but I feel my heart expand as he squeezes me close. “We need popcorn, Red Vines, throw in some chocolate. Wait, should we learn the songs so we can sing during the montages?”

“You’re not funny.” I stifle a laugh. Except my shoulders tremble, giving me away.

Declan must sense I’m barely holding on. He tickles me on my sides. I giggle uncontrollably, trying to wriggle free from his arms.

When I finally escape, he pads into the kitchen after me. As he bends into the refrigerator, it takes every ounce of my strength not to laugh when I say, “Nice backsplash.” Which, the seafoam green subway tiles Declan installed, they’re amazing.

In addition to other things…

He pops up his head over the refrigerator door, smiling as he follows my gaze trained on his backside.

“What? I’m complimenting your handiwork,” I say.

Within minutes, he warms up our leftover brunch. We sit
